Weather, weather, weather, weather… whether we like it or not!

It’s Tuesday morning, August 29th, 6:15 a.m. and I am once again sitting on my screen porch with a cup of coffee and a cat, listening to the silence of a tropical storm.   There is literally not a leaf stirring and I’m wondering whether or not this is the proverbial calm before the storm, or simply a false alarm. It’s weather… so it’s really impossible to know.

Craven, Carteret, Onslow and Jones County Schools are all on a 2-hour delay and Gramercy will be closed due to the possibility of flooding and high winds.  I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting this on the second day of a new school year.  Yesterday evening was a mad scrambling of text messages, emails, phone calls and prayer, trying to make a decision that is best for a multitude of students and parents spread all the way from New Bern to Beaufort and everywhere in between. This morning, I am wondering whether or not we got it right.

Whether we did or not, please know this:  our administrative team has, and is, carefully, prayerfully considering all aspects of this storm and how it affects our families.  More than anything, we want you to be safe.  We also don’t want to unnecessarily inconvenience you.  Gramercy Chrisitan School is uniquely situated in that we have students coming from multiple counties and sometimes what is happening in Morehead City is a far cry from what is happening in Emerald Isle. Always, we will do our best to make the wisest decision we can based on facts and experience and we will try to make a decision in a timely fashion so that you have ample time to prepare for your day.

This morning, although this stillness may mean we could have proceeded with business as usual, I am grateful for the quiet.  I am thankful my car is not under water and my lights are still on.  I am thankful my four kids are safe in their beds and will awake at some point and experience that joyful moment when they realize it’s Tuesday morning and school has been cancelled.  I may even make pancakes instead of telling them to grab a string cheese and get in the car.  I am thinking of the people in Houston who aren’t so lucky this morning and my heart goes out to them.

Enjoy this day, Gramercy family, whether you wish we were having school or you’re grateful we aren’t.  Either way, this is the day the Lord has made. Rejoice and be glad in it.
