Why Christian Education?

These are turbulent times, so much so that we might be tempted to think that the whole world is falling apart… which is actually true, but not a reality unique to the days in which we live.  The world has been falling apart since the first human beings chose their own way over God’s way. As a result, sin, death, and all the repercussions that accompany sin and death followed and have been haunting humankind ever since. So what does that have to do with Christian education?  Over 700 years before Jesus Christ was born, the prophet Isaiah spoke these words: “He (the Lord) will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure” (Isaiah 33:6). As a mother of four, this is exactly what I want for my children.  I want a sure foundation for their times, however turbulent they may be.  Another translation of this verse refers to God as “the stability and security of your times.”  Again, exactly what I want for my children.  Security.  Stability.  Assurance.  No matter what they may encounter or endure.

By far, this is the greatest benefit of Christian education. God’s Word and the worldview it provides is a solid rock in a world of shifting sand. These are turbulent times, but so were the times of Isaiah the prophet.  So were the times of Jesus Christ Incarnate. So were the 70’s when I was a kid, and so they are today.  Why Christian education?  Because the Bible and its principles offer a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge, a sure foundation… for Boomers, for Gen. X’ers, for Millennials, and for my very favorites, Gen. Z.
